THE AUVERGNE
The Auvergne is one of the most unspoilt regions of France. As yet is has not been discovered by tourists or the tourist buses! It is a stunning area of volcanic vistas, deep river gorges and towns and castles perched on pinnacles.
There are wonderful walks around Saint-Flour: up to Puy Mary for the energetic, or following the many marked trails in the area and discovering hidden cascades and remote little villages.
There are cross-country skiing trails in the area, and downhill-skiing is available half-an-hour's drive away.
Places to visit include the Alleuze, a ruined fortress castle set on a hill overlooking the most remote chapel in the area. Here there are twelve stations of the cross leading up to another chapel in the village above.
Near Vic sur Cère, on the Aurillac road, there is the Château Paulminhac, which is open for tours and is fully furnished. On the hillside opposite is another wonderful small château, part of which has been turned into an art gallery.
